Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi gets today's Strom Thurmond Award for his Old South defense of fellow Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia for failing to mention slavery in declaring Confederate History Month down yonder. Shucks, Barbour opined, the exclusion "doesn't amount to diddly." And he didn't mean the late Bo Diddley. When youare running for president, as is Barbour, you can't think of everything.

Southern politicians, lead by Barbour, are once again trying to paint the Civil War as a Constitutional issue of state's rights. This is a thinly disguised attempt to co-opt the Tea Partiers who lust after "small government." Barbour and the Tea Partiers should read Mississippi's statement of secession - it says nothing about state's rights but a lot about retaining slavery.
One of Barbour's Mississippi counties is being investigated for promoting de facto segregation of schools. Some things never change down there. .
Southern Republicans are trying to rewrite the history of the Civil War. Keep an eye out on those textbooks.
